ObjectivesFor this photo assignment, I chose to take photos of an event, namely a Saline Fiddlers concert that I performed in over the weekend. I got three of my fiddler friends to sit on the stage before the performance and I tried to get some candid shots to show our pre-performance laughs. What I LearnedAfter looking at the photos on a big screen, I wish that I had changed my angle slightly since Anja (the guitarist) has her back facing the camera, not showing any facial features. However, I'm fairly new to candid photography so I'm pretty happy with how it turned out besides the poor lighting as well as the poor positioning on my part. If I were to do a photo like this again, I would make sure to highlight the front of instruments more and maybe even have one of them be casually playing to show it's right before a performance.

ObjectivesThe objective of these photoshop assignments were to be as comfortable as possible with layer masks as this skill was used in all 4 photos. What I LearnedSince we had already done the MM assignment in Photo 1, I was pretty comfortable with it, but this assignment served as a nice reminder for how to create/manipulate layer masks. I always get the white versus black and which conceals/reveals on the layer mask, but by editing these photos, I got a lot more practice with it and now I'm very comfortable with that technique. Overall, I enjoyed this assignment and thought it was a good, fun thing to do to freshen the memory with layer mask techniques.
ObjectiveThe objective of this assignment was to take photos and turn them into black and white photos, utilizing the black and white to highlight certain parts of the photo. What I LearnedSince my camera battery wasn't working over the Disney trip, I had to use my phone for photos. Luckily, I got a very good lesson in how to take good photos with a phone camera and some of the techniques that comes along with it. I had to learn how to focus the camera right on where I wanted, which sometimes meant I had to approach at a different angle as I couldn't set the focus point manually. I think this was overall a good learning experience as I won't always have my camera on me, so sometimes I'll have to rely on phones instead.
ObjectiveThe objective of this assignment was to create a high dynamic range (HDR) photo. This was achieved by taking underexposed, overexposed, and normally exposed photos of a given scene, then merging them together in photoshop to highlight all parts of the photo. Hover over photos for metadata. What I LearnedFrom this assignment, I learned the benefits of taking HDR photos as well as the process of how to make a good one. I'm sure I'll be using that merging tool much more in the future as it allows me to take photos of a larger variety of subjects but also maintain the balance of exposures within the photo. Overall, I really enjoyed this assignment and learning about using the HDR Pro merge tool as well as the sliders/filters it offers.
ObjectiveThe goal of this assignment was to take 9 photos of different subjects that had one common overarching theme, then to put the in a grid, making a mini typology. I decided to make typologies of two of my favorite things; cameras and plants. What I LearnedAs always, I got better at photoshop through this assignment, especially with aligning photos on a canvas as well as getting a frame around that photo. Additionally, I learned a lot about how photoshop helps with spacing and how to evenly space photos on a canvas using the purple guide lines. Overall, I really enjoyed this assignment and I thought it was a fun way to get better at photoshop as well as to learn more about our personalities/interests.
ObjectiveFor this photo assignment, I chose to do light painting, and I decided to light paint my sister's car. What I LearnedWhile getting inspiration for this assignment, I found many good tips on how to light paint effectively, and the biggest lesson I learned was to keep the ISO as low as possible and keep the aperture as wide as it goes, to set the shutter speed for at least 1 second, and to keep the focus in manual. Keeping the ISO so low helped to reduce digital noise, which I managed to get away practically untouched by. It took a long time, but with a friend to help, it was much easier.
ObjectiveThis assignment's objective was to take a series of photos and stitch them together in photoshop to create a panoramic image. What I LearnedI didn't learn much about this topic since I had the same assignment last trimester, but I'd like to take more of these photos in the future, specifically to try the mini planet technique. I attempted that, but photoshop wasn't able to stitch it together. If I can find a better location, I'l definitely try that, though!
ObjectiveThe objective of this photoshop assignment was to create different types of frames around a photo. These frames included gallery frames, gaussian blur frames, lasso frames, and spray frames. Hover over photos to see frame type What I LearnedAs I'm still quite new to photoshop, this was the first time I ever framed a photo with many of these techniques, especially the lasso and spray frame. Thus, I learned a lot about how to frame a photo and what options I have in order to complement certain photos. My favorite frame was definitely the spray frame as it aided the photo with the unique patterns that gave a gentle gradient into the background. Overall, I enjoyed this assignment since it taught me something new about photoshop, which I'm always excited to learn!
ObjectiveThe goal of this assignment was to take nine photos, each corresponding to a specific Principle of Design (POD). The topics were: balance, contrast, simplicity, movement, repetition/rhythm, emphasis, proportion, space, and unity. SlideshowWhat I LearnedFrom this assignment, I learned the most about the design of unity. I had a few ideas of what to take a photo of in order to fit this category, and it did take me quite a few tries to get the right shot. I tried to fit as many other principles into it as I could, especially balance, but ultimately I couldn't get movement or proportion into the shot. However, I definitely fit significantly more principles into the photo than I originally anticipated, and I am very pleased with the outcome for that photo. Overall, I really enjoyed this assignment since it had some limitations, but ultimately it allowed us to have a bit of freedom with regards to what we took photos of.
ObjectiveThe goal of this assignment was to take a photo that emphasized colors. I chose to take a picture of my cat and turn everything but his eyes black and white so it created more contrast/emphasis. What I LearnedFrom this assignment, I learned that in order to get those bright, vibrant colors, the number one factor is lighting. As I was inside for these photos, the lighting wasn't great, which ultimately made the colors less vibrant than if I had more natural lighting on my subject. However, I did enjoy looking around for bright colors and finding techniques to make them pop.
